How do Telehealth appointments work?

In a Telehealth appointment, you and your child will receive the same level of service you would in a one-on-one session. We’ll offer practical, actionable strategies to work on between online sessions, professional recommendations and advice, and help your child reach their goals and develop new ones.

All you need is:

  • A quiet, private space where your child feels comfortable talking about their thoughts and feelings

  • A smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera, microphone and speakers

  • An internet connection

  • A notebook to take notes (if needed).

It all starts with an initial informal assessment where we’ll get to know your child and their unique strengths, set some mental health and developmental goals, and recommend intervention strategies tailored to your child’s needs. This initial assessment can be completed via Telehealth.

What techniques do we use?

Our child psychologists utilise practical, results-driven strategies to help your child reach their full potential

Our approach to online therapy sessions

Our experienced therapists and psychologists aim to support kids and teens to reach their goals through positive mental health and well-being. Our process is simple, so we can get to know your child and support them based on their individual needs:

  1. An initial assessment, including goal setting.

  2. Intervention tailored to your child’s needs and aspirations.

  3. Measuring progress and reviewing goals we’ve set together.

  4. Setting new goals and interventions based on progress and capacity.

All sessions are available via Telehealth, or you’re welcome to pop into Active Eight in Toowong, Brisbane. Our psychology hub is a bright, colourful space where your child is bound to feel at ease!

Possible assessments for your child

Where possible or appropriate, we will provide recognised, evidence-driven assessments like:

  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-IV IQ) is an intelligence test that measures a child’s intellectual ability and five cognitive domains that impact performance.

  • Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-III, achievement) is an individually administered achievement test. This assessment can analyse academic achievement, support the diagnosis of specific learning disabilities, academic program placement, intervention planning and dyslexia screening and evaluation.

  • The Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test (UNIT-2, nonverbal IQ tests) provides a multidimensional intelligence assessment in a completely nonverbal format.

  • The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (ADOS-2) assists in diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder across age, developmental level and language skills.

You are welcome to request these assessments for your child, or we may recommend a particular assessment based on your child’s needs, goals, strengths, and challenges.

Other assessments, including supportive questionnaires, are available on request. Please contact our team to discuss further assessments.

Involving your child’s support circle

Active Eight is all about collaborating with kids and their families to reach a common goal. With this in mind, we might ask about working with your child's school or other important characters in their life — if needed, we can even visit at home or school (note: there may be an extra cost involved). Just like your child’s support circle, our goal is to provide practical advice and come up with clever ideas to improve your child’s life for the better.

This is a team effort that includes family members, schools, and other health professionals alongside the team at Active Eight!

What are the benefits of psychology for children?

Growing up is about learning how to communicate with and relate to others, express our needs and feelings, overcome stress and adversity, and develop a healthy mindset ahead of adulthood. This is a lot to deal with while navigating the world, and we aim to help your child find solutions for immediate problems.

Psychology (even our online programs) can benefit your child in a number of ways:

Emotional well-being

Child psychology can help children understand and manage their emotions better. This leads to improved emotional regulation, reduced stress, anxiety, and depression, and an overall sense of happiness and well-being.

Behavioural improvement

Psychology can help identify and address behavioural issues early on, promoting positive behaviour and reducing problematic conduct. Children can learn effective coping strategies and behaviour management techniques.

Cognitive development

Together, we can work on enhancing cognitive skills like attention, memory, problem-solving, and decision-making. This can lead to improved academic performance and better learning outcomes.

Social skills

Psychology can help children develop strong social skills, like communication, empathy, cooperation, and conflict resolution. These skills are vital for building healthy relationships and navigating social situations.

Self-esteem

Psychology can boost children's self-esteem and self-confidence by helping them recognise their strengths and abilities, accept themselves, and develop a positive self-image.

Parent-child relationships

We can help improve parent-child relationships by offering parents guidance on effective communication, discipline strategies, and understanding their child's needs and developmental stages.

Trauma & grief support

We can support children who have experienced trauma, loss, or significant life changes, like death or divorce in the family. We help children process their feelings and emotions in a healthy way.

Learning disabilities & special needs

Psychology can assist in identifying learning disabilities and special needs early, allowing for tailored interventions and support to help children succeed in school and life.

Bullying & peer relationships

We can help children facing bullying or struggling with peer relationships. We’ll provide strategies to handle difficult situations and build positive connections.

Healthy coping mechanisms

Psychology equips children with effective coping mechanisms for stress, challenges, and setbacks. This contributes to resilience and adaptability.

Future mental health

Early intervention and support from our child psychologists can contribute to better mental health outcomes as children grow into adolescents and adults.

Personal growth

Child psychology promotes personal growth and self-awareness from a young age, encouraging children to develop into well-rounded individuals.

We can also assist with a range of mental health conditions and challenges, organising educational planning, supports, and more.
